Ah, the holidays… that magical time of year filled with twinkling lights, festive gatherings, and endless to-do lists. If you’re anything like me, it’s a season where joy and stress sometimes mix like eggnog and, well, fruitcake. But here’s the good news: you can use your strengths to navigate the holidays with more grace and less grind.
Your CliftonStrengths® are like your holiday superpowers. When you lean into them—rather than fighting against them—you can show up more authentically, manage stress more effectively, and even create new traditions that reflect what matters most to you.
1. Start with Your Strengths
Your strengths influence how you naturally approach challenges, relationships, and celebrations. Before the holiday hustle hits full swing, take a moment to revisit your Top 5 strengths. How do they show up when you’re thriving? What about when you’re stressed?
For example:
If you have Achiever® like me, you might get energy from completing your holiday checklist, but you’ll want to watch for burnout or overwhelm if you take on too much.
With Empathy®, you’re likely tuned in to everyone’s emotions, which is a gift—but don’t forget to make space for your own.
And if you’re high in Adaptability®, last-minute changes might not phase you, but you could feel drained if things get too chaotic.
Reviewing your Top 5 CliftonStrengths® can bring you greater awareness about the ways you can move through this time of year with greater ease, energy, excellence, and enjoyment. It can also help you identify potential “watch-outs” that might trip you up.
2. Tame Holiday Stressors with Your Strengths
Holidays come with their fair share of pressure—gatherings, gift-giving, family dynamics, and a packed schedule. But each strength offers a unique way to manage these stressors. Consider what gift or ability you bring to situations because of each of your Top 5.
Some examples:
Responsibility®: Use your talent for follow-through to delegate tasks and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Harmony®: Be the peacemaker in those tricky family conversations, steering the focus toward shared joy rather than disagreements.
Focus®: Prioritize what matters most and let go of the rest. (Do you really need five side dishes for Christmas dinner?)
Think of your strengths as your personal toolkit. The more you know how to use them, the better you’ll handle the season’s challenges.
3. Set Strengths-Based Boundaries
Holidays often stretch us thin, especially if we say “yes” to everything. While our strengths give us superpowers that we can bring to situations, they also reflect some of our deepest needs. In order to bring your best, you’ll need to find ways to fill those needs.
Very often, honoring our needs means that we need to set boundaries that keep us whole and healthy. Consider how your strengths can help you set boundaries that align with your values and energy:
Deliberative®: Take time to think through invitations or commitments before responding. A thoughtful “no” is better than an overwhelmed “yes.”
Input®: Share your knowledge strategically. You don’t have to be everyone’s holiday planner, historian, and recipe researcher all at once.
Relator®: Focus on deep, meaningful connections with a few people instead of attending every party or event.
